Spencer D. Shapiro
About
Joining Horn Wright, LLP, Spencer D. Shapiro is a litigator, with extensive experience handling civil rights, personal injury, and municipal law cases in the New York State Supreme Courts and Federal District Courts.
As a Deputy County Attorney for the Litigation and Appeals Bureau of the Nassau County Attorney’s office, Mr. Shapiro aggressively defended the County against claims of municipal liability through motion practice, depositions, and at trial, taking several cases to verdict. As a founding member of the Early Case Assessment and Litigation Support Section, Mr. Shapiro also oversaw the intake and triage of notices of claims received by the County, identifying problematic claims, and assessing the County’s potential liability.
Drawing on his experience, Mr. Shapiro now devotes his practice to representing victims of civil rights violations, including police brutality, false arrest, malicious prosecution, and prisoners’ rights. Mr. Shapiro also represents clients who have been injured in all types of accidents. Mr. Shapiro’s municipal law experience is invaluable when a client’s claim is against a municipality or municipal agency (e.g., school districts, public transportation agencies, etc.) as these claims have very strict deadlines and must be filed expeditiously to avoid being time-barred.
Mr. Shapiro earned his Juris Doctor from St. John's University School of Law and an undergraduate degree in Sociology from Stony Brook University.
